Former Arizona Diamondbacks hero delivers roadside heroics

It was the first World Series ever played in Arizona and Luis Gonzalez was the star who had the final word. In Game 7 here in Phoenix, Gonzalez drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, winning the Series for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

A few days ago, the former slugger topped those heroics by rescuing a woman from a car after she was involved in a head-on collision in Paradise Valley. A friend of the former All-Star captured the aftermath of the fiery accident on video.

The two men were with a friend of theirs driving east on Lincoln Drive towards Scottsdale Road when they witnessed a vehicle cross the center line and slam head-on into the woman's car. The former slugger and his buddies pulled over to help the drivers involved in the crash.

Gonzalez pulled the 82-year-old woman out of her car. She had suffered injuries not considered life-threatening, fire officials said.

The five-time All-Star said the crash was "pretty scary," but that he did not pause before helping the older woman. "I just reacted," he said. "I didn't think about it, to be honest with you."

In the video his friend posted online, Gonzalez can be seen comforting the rattled woman.

"Gonzo pulled her out and held her the whole time," his buddy told The Arizona Republic. "She didn't know what hit her."

The 49-year-old Gonzalez has once again melted the hearts of Phoenix-area residents.

Accident injury victims sometimes suffer serious damage, including head or neck injuries, back injuries, broken bones, internal injuries and other types of physical harm. Injuries sustained in violent head-on collisions can be among the most severe.
