What caused deadly Interstate 17 crash this morning?

At high speeds, motor vehicle accident injuries can be more severe and fatalities more likely. Nowhere in the Phoenix area are speeds higher than on the interstate highways crisscrossing and encircling the metro.

A pair of crashes early this morning on southbound I-17 has left two people dead, officials with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said. The first of the incidents was a motorcycle crash just after 5 am at Yorkshire Drive, DPS said.

After the motorcycle accident, three drivers stopped their vehicles to see if they could help the motorcyclist. At some point after that, another vehicle came along and struck those motorists as well as the motorcyclist, officials said.

Killed in that second crash were the motorcyclist and a woman bystander.

Law enforcement officials said two other bystanders suffered critical injuries in that second crash and were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. They were both listed in critical condition. Police said a third bystander was injured, but declined to be hospitalized or taken for examination.

That third person is apparently talking to DPS investigators about the sequence of events.

According to a trooper, officials have ruled out drunken or drugged driving as a cause of the crash. He said it appears that investigators will pin the blame on driver error instead.

"Most of our collisions are driver error," the officer told a TV news reporter. “We are questioning the driver of the vehicle that ran into the scene to figure out exactly what was going on."

We do not yet know why the driver struck those bystanders, but we do know that in many similar cases drivers were distracted. And at high speeds, distractions can have disastrous results.
